Bartolomé de Las Casas into the 21st Century: Perspectives and Provocations (an online event)

In place of our postponed in-person conference (rescheduled for June 2023), Lascasian studies at Providence College will host a fast-paced on-line event. Wednesday, June 22rd, (5-6PM EDT), Thursday 23rd (9AM-12PM), and Friday, 24th (9AM-12PM)


In seven hours over three days, attendees of this gathering, will have the opportunity to:

  • Maintain and expand the academic network of Las Casas scholars

  • Learn from top researchers in the field

  • Discover new resources and methods

  • Develop research ideas in conversation with colleagues

  • Help shape the future of Lascasian studies

A combination of plenary webinars and thematic breakouts will allow participants to engage and debate a diversity of themes raised by Las Casas’s life and legacy, from philosophy and theology, politics and colonization, anthropology and ethics.

Provisional Schedule:

Wednesday, June 22nd, 5–6pm: meet-and-greet happy hour.
Thursday, June 23rd, 9AM–12PM History, Theology, Philosophy
  • Webinar: Presentation and Q&A featuring Prof. Mariano Delgado (U. Freiburg, Switzerland)

  • Zoom: Thematic workshops (according to interests)

Friday, June 24th, 9AM–12PM Sources and Interpretation
  • Webinar: Roundtable: Translating Las Casas

    • Andrew Wilson, Mariano Delgado, David Lantigua

  • Zoom: Thematic groups (Translation and Interpretation)

  • Presentation: John Carter Brown Library, Resources and Methods

  • Introducing the Society for Lascasian Studies
