"Bartolomé de Las Casas Society" soon to be launched!

Thank you for your continued engagement with Lascasian studies. We give special thanks to all those who were able to participate in last June’s conference at Providence College. Your energy, insight, and enthusiasm make this work possible.

At the close of June’s conference we mentioned that we would soon be incorporating as a learned society dedicated to the study of Bartolomé de Las Casas. We like to announce that this process is now nearing competition, and that the “Bartolomé de Las Casas Society” (a.k.a.) Societas Lascasiana) will soon be established as a 503c non-profit association in the state of Rhode Island, with a stated mission:

to gather an institutionally independent community of scholars to explore Bartolomé de las Casas’s life, context, works, influence, interlocutors, and complex legacy in the wider Atlantic world through conferences, public engagement, collaborations, publications and other educational endeavors.

The non-profit bylaws have been drafted and are now under legal review. We anticipate filing the articles of incorporation with the State of Rhode Island before the end of the year. We anticipate more news to come soon!

We look forward to your continued participation as we bring a more independent and formal framework to our work together.

Many thanks,
